Celebrating Cultures, Promoting Integration
Since the right-wing party won elections in Poland, the newspapers all over the Europe haven’t stopped making comments about social changes in the country.
Firstly the new government tried to change the constitution, which undermines a democratic country. Secondly a heated discussion and controversy arose from the restriction of the abortion law.
Apart from the most obvious issues mentioned above, the Polish government proved several times that they want stop pushing society towards conservatism.
The members of the conservative party in Poland are not going to stop making controversial speeches. Recently, a Polish nationalist member of the European Parliament Janusz Korwin-Mikke made a statement, which may cause suspension. During the debate about the gender pay gap. He literally said “ women are weaker, less intelligent and smaller”. After his statement, the parliament’s president has begun an investigation to see if Korwin- Mikke didn’t break the body’s rules. He may be banned for using xenophobic language, behaviour and being racist.
The Rules of the Procedure says that speeches should be respectful not defamatory, Janusz Korwin- Mikke definitely didn’t follow these rules.
The Spanish socialist Iratxe Garcia Perez responded immediately to Mikke’s speech. She said “ According to what you’re saying and according to your theory, I wouldn’t have the right to be here as a member of Parliament.
“I know you’re very upset and very concerned about that fact that we women can represent citizens on an equal footing with you, I think I need to defend European women against men like you.”
